There it lays on the ground,

various life forms all around,

motionlessly sitting at this spot for centuries,

supporting life forms is all that it gives, I believe,

Insects and animals seek refuge under it,

while various plants thrive on it,

holes and cracks are found all over it,

yet the beauty of life can be found in it,

the boulder that is full of life,

solidly sits here and gives it's support,

it asks for nothing in return,

all it wants is a place on this earth.

Rubbery Revenge

A day to learn about nature
A day with fun and laughter
Definitely a day to remember!

My 'scheduled' walk had a delay
It had to be replaced by today
So along the woods we made our way

The 'monkey' has a way
Of keeping my mischief from going astray
'What goes around comes around'
he always likes to say

This, I never realised how true
until an incident yesterday

Monkey started throwing rubber seed shells at me
Which I could'nt revenge, seeing how fast he could flee
So a few rubber seed pods I tried to hide
Hoping for an opportunity to retaliate later that night

My guardian angels must have been around that night
And my lucky stars must have been shinning bright
For revenge came much sooner than I'd anticipate
Not more than an hour I had to wait :P

As dear monkey was driving home later that day
A seed pod ripened, burst open, and struck his head!!!!!

I didn't know rubber seeds did that
but anyhow, anyway...

Laments at Langkawi

Being a small part of the Health Ministry

As a part of cooperation, inter-agency

I had to represent the Division of Pharmacy

All the way to Langkawi

for a meeting with the Agriculture Ministry

The job description was not too bad actually
the advertising guidelines we had to amend accordingly
To upkeep with any current policy
and the neverending demands of the entire industry...
But being an invitee
with no colleagues to accompany
I was bored as I could be!

Took a flight alone so very early
found my way to the venue in Langkawi
Participated and contributed whenever possibly
But yikes, a meeting involving the Law
was far dry as one could imagine it to be!

Some leisure time we had fortunately

To scout for dinner individually

With no ideas on my lonesome itenerary

I had to find a cure

For my pent-up boredom and hyperactivity!

And so I remembered a quote from Parker, Dorothy

"The only cure for boredom is curiosity!"

In my small carry-on bag

A bath towel I packed

Along with a good book

Then I set out on foot
Giving the surroundings a quick look

And but what was ahead of me

but a small beach; the clear blue sky & sea!

I choose a winding rocky path

That headed out to sea

Couldnt help wondering...

trekker's addiction, maybe? :P

Appreciating the view around me

Enjoying the breeze from where I sat

Up above the sun shone brightly

I thus dug out my book and read and read
Dangerous as I realised my solo stint could be

What I did I had no regret

For I managed to catch a magnificent sunset!

The orange glow moved gradually

behind the clouds till only

Golden streaks illuminated the dark blue sea

before disappearing totally

A rare sight that surely captivated me

As darkness encroached

I realised how late it could be

so I headed back hastenly

grabbing a bun for my growling tummy

Hoping that the night meeting

would not start without me

Along the way I passed shops of duty-free

spotting chocolates I remembered

the 'list' that a niece and nephew gave to me

I guess tomorrow's entertainment shall be

fulfilling an aunt's responsibility :P

The first long day has passed finally

Slightly better than I anticipated it to be

To those who had entertained me

whether directly or through the PC

I thank thee dearly!

As crazy as my pals think I am
I managed to wake up at 4 a.m.
Dragged my feet
Just to meet
At the Trail Trekkers Den

Through the highways
To the Broga Hills
Just thinking 'bout sunrise
Brought such thrills

To our surprise
There were cars, cars, and cars before our eyes!
To think that we were crazy
To wake up so early
This just proves that
there are folks madder than we!

In pitch-black darkness
The beam of torchlights
Illuminated the winding trail
The sound of footsteps
Echoing throughout the travail

On the hill there was already a crowd
which my disturbed soul found a little too loud
Looking up to the clouds
I stopped awhile at the second peak
Just in time to see the rays peek

Eager to get away
from the incessant chatter
Towards the third summit
I began to wander

As dawn broke, a gentle breeze
Orchestrated a symphony of rustling leaves
Through the clouds of gray,
the golden sunrays made their way
Painting the world
In a psychedellic array

As the sombre, slow darkness fell away
A solitary, orange tint sung the begining of a new day
With the horizon blooming into a soft ultramarine
The surroundings danced
to a serenade of shades of green

The maestro of pigment
The conductor of colour
The spectrum's director
Is nothing else but Light
And for that I am glad
That I am blessed with sight

A lil' incident previously
Had left me rather unhappy
But after basking in such beauty
Drowned in nature's melody
I found a sense of serenity
Thus I headed down, with a wee smile
Ready again to face the days ahead of me

My First Fright

I drifted to the office still caught in mid-snore

When a surprise stopped my yawn in mid-way

Could it be a mistake?
But it was simply not an error
For in front of me was no one but the deputy director!

Always a team member

Trying to revise the law as far as I could remember!

Sections and Regulations
Oh my, was I
Driven to a state of agitation!
Which fortunately had subside
After a quick revision :P

by their sustainable, ecological technology

or the old-age piston a.k.a. fire lighter
Was truly an eye-opener

One had to first wet a piece of the lighter

before shoving it into the chamber

which compressed air thus producing fire!

This thus makes you wonder...

to start a fire, you first need water!

Another interesting thing to ponder

is that this simple creation of combustion

has been traced back to an important invention,

one that has brought to mankind civilisation

For this was brought to Rudolph Diesel ages ago

If this does not yet ring a bell

How you got to work today is a good clue to tell

For He was none-whatsoever

The array of colours

on the womenfolks' woven mats

Is a work of art

that'll make you take of your hats

where strips of paper were cut with accuracy

an effort completed painstakingly

Remember that we had coloured paper

which made the task much easier

To think they only had leaves, without colour

and had to produce something much larger!

Making our own lemang

was indeed a fun treat

a seemingly easy task

but rather difficult to complete

For each block of bamboo

was rotated over a fire
thank goodness we had a good helper

or none of us would have dinner!

was worth two thumbs up

which I think we really did
For the food was really great

Everything was yummy and nice

To the floating market
a trip was made
To see how on water

was all what we had left to uncover

"A tale of mine
I'd like to tell
of how my life turned from bliss to hell

In the midst of Phnom Penh
we lived happily
All nine of us, a blissful family
When
Into the city the Khmer Rouge conquered
and
To the outskirts we were relocated

From our homes we were stripped bare
To out horror the sufferings did not end there
From the moment we were evacuated
my entire family were separated
Where my family members went I did not know
to a children's camp I was forced to go

Working in the rice fields
From daylight to moonlight
the only comfort I had
was a younger sister by my side

Watery porridge twice a day was all I had
To a famished nine-year old I was barely fed
Frogs, spiders, crickets, beetles
What I caught; what I ate
Disgusting as it seemed
those sustained my life to this date

My wee sister, at an age so young and tender
creepies and crawlies; she was unable to capture
She begged and plead a bite from me
but in such adversity; I had to be stingy

It was often that I ate in secrecy
Yes, I knew that was mean of me
but I barely had enough to survive,
How was I to sustain another life?

Day by day she became thinner
Till starvation got the better of her
We were in line receiving dinner
when suddenly she fell
and dropped the precious bowl of rice water

Frantically, she stooped and scooped
but tell me, how do you gather
with bare hands, a bowl of water?

Helpless, she began to wail
but that was to no avail
for no matter how we begged
A second helping we did not get

Ravenous, helpless
I coaxed my sister
summoning all my energy
I carried her to bed,
with hope that tomorrow would be better

That night she did not sleep
but rambled on in incessant chatter
of our siblings, father and mother
of how life used to be better
of how did she often wonder
when she would see them in the future

When dawn broke
I gently shook her
but her little figure
remained still
her expression tranquil

I called out again to her
whispered in her ear
to get her awake i was eager
for the fear, of the soldiers
who would not hesitate
to whip those who lazed in bed

yet motionless she laid
upon our rattan bed
a soldier came up
and told me not to bother
for my sister would be sleeping forever

Young as I was
It was not till years later
that I understood
that to see again I would never
my little sister

the war has long passed
but scars still linger
my eyes still water
whenever my mind would wander
off to the memory of my dear little sister"

All 'bout Cambodia I've recently been writing,
There's more to go; but I'd figured that'd be boring
Gotten this poem in a mail today,
A nonsense verse; but surely would brighten up your day!

One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys got up to fight.
Back-to-back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.
One was blind and the other couldn't see,
So they chose a dummy for a referee.
A blind man went to see fair play,
A dumb man went to shout "hooray!"
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
And rushed to save the two dead boys.
A paralyzed donkey walking by,
Kicked the copper in the eye,
Sent him through a rubber wall,
Into a dry ditch and drowned them all.
(If you don't believe this lie is true,
Ask the blind man -- he saw it too!)

Over the murky waters
of the Tonle Sap rivers
I cruised beneath
the scorching heat

I heard
a little girl's cries
I searched
nothing was before my eyes

Then she appeared
in rags of red
A tattered cap
over her head

In a tin bucket
cross-legged she sat
An oar in her hand
was all she had

Her desire was
simple and clear
All she wanted
was just a dollar

From my purse
I answered her plea
To her outstreched hands
that accepted with glee

With a flick of her oar
just as she appeared from no where
She vanished into the horizon
and disappeared into thin air

I truly admire
the courage of
the little child peddlar
or rather
the red brave warrior
of Tonle Sap river

Though how choppy and filthy

the waters are
I realised
how blessed my life has been so far

If you are reading this on your screen
take a sec to reflect
how fortunate in life you have been
for what are our complaints and worries
to those whose life since birth
are burdened with miseries...

What's just 'round the corner?
Of course it's Chinese New Year!
And what is there to do?
Shopping, and SPRING CLEANING,
just to name a few!

Dirty work had to be done,
so that was priority number one...
In the wee hours of dawn,
still stiffling a yawn everyone got out of bed,
all ready for the day ahead

On and on we persevered
till every corner was conquered,
cobwebs were dusted
grease and grime were busted,
Gone were loads of rubbish
floor was given new coat of polish

Rest was never in the plan
till everything was spick and span,
Never was there any complaints
of muscle aches and pains

A day's of hard work
eventually came to an end
much to the delight
of the entire clan

I can't say that
everywhere was sparkling clean
But to those involved in combat
definitely that was what it seemed!

Tough as the effort may have been
but the reward
was what none could easily redeem!

Weasel Woes

I was given a gift,
A parcel which I'd never expect to receive...
'What is it?' aloud I wondered
'Open it' I was instructed

'It's coffee!'
Obviously, but of FINE quality!'
'Tell me the reason why?'
'Later, after you have a try!'

And so did I, with a sigh...

'Ever heard of the weasel;
- the crafty creature?'
'Yes, always;
- in kiddie literature'

'He goes from tree to tree,
selecting coffee beans of best quality,
but as smart as he can be,
never chews the seeds ever does he...'

'You and I both know,
the fate of any seed; if swallowed whole,

What's not digested, comes out from the back!'

What I've ingested has been revealed,
